Know the facets of LED lighting

LED lighting is an innovative exciting new approach to lighting. It turns out that producing light by heating a thin piece of metal, a metal filament, is not an efficient, nor a desirable method to light our world. LED lights are super energy efficient, solid state light sources.

LED lights have no moving parts, no toxic gases and no filament to burn, break or fail. There are nothing to break, rupture, shatter or leak. There are no dangerous materials to contaminate the environment. LED lighting devices are not subject to short term or sudden burnout and will last many times longer than standard incandescent bulbs. LED lifetimes on the order of decades are usual.

Benefits of LEDs

   1. Super energy efficient - LED lighting devices consume a fraction of the wattage compared to an incandescent bulb.
   2. Extremely long life - LED lighting devices typically last for tens of thousands of hours versus a typical 2,000 to 5,000 hours for incandescent bulbs and only about 2,000 hours for halogen bulbs. LED lifetimes on the order of decades are usual.
   3. LEDs are cool when operating - the efficiency of the semi-conductor allows for the production of light without wasted heat. Incandescent and especially halogen bulbs produce significant wasteful, unwanted heat - heat that must be removed by expensive air conditioning.
   4. LEDs are low voltage devices that require fewer materials and precautions during and after installation. The power supply for the LED lights uses 12 volt DC current.
   5. LED lighting devices light the surfaces and areas that are required to be illuminated - excess, unwanted light does not bleed off into the environment. There is no obscuring excess light to ruin the view.
   6. LED lights have no moving parts, no toxic gases and no filament to burn, break or fail. There's nothing to break, rupture, shatter or leak. There are no dangerous materials to contaminate the environment (see link: Shining a light on hazards of fluorescent bulbs).
   7. Plants and foliage illuminated by LED lighting devices retain their natural colors - greens stay green, reds stay red - the color is not washed out.
   8. LED lighting devices can enhance the security of your home or business - because the LEDs are so energy efficient, the exterior lighting system can be left illuminated from dusk to dawn for only pennies a night. Incandescent and even compact fluorescent lights consume much more energy and are usually turned off early in the night.
   9. LED lighting devices are small and easily mounted or installed in just about any location, allowing for the optimal illumination of the desired area(s).
10. The long service life of LED lighting devices (50,000 hours or more) and the dramatic improvements over incandescent and fluorescent bulbs has set the stage for the promise of huge energy savings. In fact, according to Sandia National Laboratories, "..… worldwide energy use for illumination could be decreased by around 50%"
